For most of the last year, the honest answer to "can my customers scan a code and order" was no. There was a schema, an orphaned mockup with a fake button, and nothing a real diner could reach. That has changed, and this post exists partly to correct what we published earlier.

What we said before, and why it was right at the time

Our online ordering post stated plainly that there was no QR-scan-to-order flow. When it was written, that was accurate — and it stayed accurate through a re-audit where the API existed but nothing in the product could reach it.

That's the standing rule in this content: an endpoint isn't a feature until a real customer can get to it. QR ordering failed that bar twice. It passes it now, which is why this is a new post rather than a quiet edit to the old one.

How it works from the restaurant's side

The QR is generated per table, from the table management screen. You get a card per table that you print and put out — which means the code identifies which table the order came from, so the kitchen and the service staff know where it's going without anyone asking.

Worth knowing about one specific bug that was fixed along the way: every minted QR URL was originally a relative path, which meant no phone could actually scan it into anything usable. If you generated codes early and found they didn't work, that was why, and regenerating them now will produce working ones.

How it works for the diner

They scan, and a page opens in their phone's browser. No app, no account creation at the table, no waiting for a waiter to be free. They see the menu, including the veg and non-veg marking, and they place an order that goes into the same order flow as one a server would have taken.

The practical effect is on your busiest twenty minutes. The bottleneck at peak is usually staff availability to take orders, not kitchen throughput — a table that can order without waiting removes that bottleneck at exactly the moment it costs you most.

Where AXOIX is honest about its limits

  • Test your own codes before printing a hundred of them. Generate one, scan it with an actual phone on mobile data, and place a test order end to end. Given this feature's history, verify rather than assume.
  • This is ordering, not payment at the table. Settlement still runs through your normal billing flow.
  • Combos and buffets still aren't orderable. They exist in the catalog and can be priced, but no order path accepts one — see the honest limits post.
  • Tips still have nowhere to go. The backend handles them; no screen anywhere lets a diner or a server enter one. Three audits running.
  • It doesn't replace service. A diner who wants to ask about a dish still needs a person.

Practical notes before you roll it out

  • Print durably. Table cards live in a wet, greasy environment. Lamination or an acrylic holder pays for itself.
  • Keep the paper menu. A meaningful share of diners won't scan, and taking away the alternative annoys them.
  • Brief the staff. Servers need to know orders can now arrive without them, or they'll be surprised at the pass.
  • Watch the first week. Sit with it during a real service and see where diners get stuck.
